Facebook opens up status searches

fbgoogleRemember a few months ago when I said that Facebook opening up status search would happen and it would be HUGE for consumer marketing. Well yesterday it happened, and now the status updates of anyone who has not changed the default ‘public’ setting are available for all to find.

This is such a big deal for marketing I’m still trying to grasp the implications. Most certainly when people realize that their status updates are now public information there’s going to be an uproar, because Facebook was built on the premise that you’re only sharing with your close friends. So it will be interesting to see if FB backpeddals on this one - although I doubt it cause this is basically the only business model that makes sense for FB. It’s not only a play to compete with Twitter, but actually a move to dominate the internet search space overall and create the real Google killer. If anyone can do it, Facebook, with its 300 million users, can.
